Greetings. We read Psalm 144 today. From the reading of 1 Sam 17 yesterday, we saw how David trusted God and won a battle nobody expected him to win. Today, in Psalm 144, we see how he saw God.
Firstly, he acknowledged God as his source of strength. He recognized it was God who won the battles. He praised God.
David also recognized the frailty of humanity in contrast of the majesty of God. Man is helpless. God is almighty. Man needs to depend on God. David is honest with his dependance on God. He called on God to continue to protect the Israelites and to give them victory against their enemies.
God gave us talents and gifts. However, it will be naive to think we can make it in life on our own without God. It is arrogant to think we do not need God. As Christians, our Christian walk is a victorious one. We keep on winning for God. We keep on winning because of God. We trust God for our victory. We depend on God for our victory.
“David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” 1 Sam 17:45
Whe you face your Goliath, do you choose God-confidence or selff-confidence?
Both Psalms 144 and 59 (which we will read on Friday) belong to the category of “laments,” but with different nuances. Psalm 144 leans more towards thanksgiving and trust, while Psalm 59 emphasizes pleading and confidence in God’s justice. Both psalms can offer comfort and strength to individuals facing their own struggles, whether external enemies or internal anxieties.
Stop trying to make it on your own. It is so tiring and so frustrating. Trust God. Depend on God. What is stopping you from totally depending on God?
