Quite a bit of things were recorded in 2 Sam 2. Following the death of King Saul, David succeeded as king. However, he was only king of Judah. Abner, the commander of King Saul’s army made Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, as the king as the other areas of Israel. Abner who fought for Ish-Bosheth had many battles with David’s men.
We saw the transition of power from King Saul to King David. Ish-bosheth was not anointed by God. His reign lasted all but two years.
There was a tension between unity and division – unity when David made a covenant with the people in Jabesh-gilead, division between Judah and the rest of Israel. And the conflict between Joab and Abner would lead to a tragic end. That’s the story for another day.
Seek Unity and Peace. In our Christian walk, we want to maintain peace with others. We want to look for opportunities to reconcile differences and build bridges. That does not mean we are doormats though.
Trust God’s Timing. David waited a long time to take the throne. After he was anointed, he was running for his life. When he took the throne, he was only the king of Judah. He took over the reign of the whole kingdom two years later. David trusted God’s timing. He did not took things into his own hands.
Keep the Faith. David remained faithful to God. Despite all the difficulties, he chose to obey God. He was a man after God’s
To summarize, we can learn several valuable lessons from David. Maintain peace and unity as much as possible. Trust God and his timing. Do not rush ahead. Wait patiently on God’s guidance and direction. Always seek God’s guidance. Ask God for wisdom. Do not lean on our own understanding.
