10/06/2024|2 Sam 17 – Regret!

Have you ever made a decision, choosing something over another, and instantly realized you made a grave mistake? Have you even made a choice that led you down a path you never wanted? Regret is a powerful emotion, a mixture of sorrow, anger, and the longing for a different outcome. Regret is normally too late.

In 2 Sam 17, Absalom rejected the sound advice given by Ahithophel, which “seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.” Following that advice would have put David in real danger. Yet, Absalom and his men did not leave well enough alone. He asked for Hushai’s thoughts. He decided to follow the latter’s idea. And that ultimately became his undoing.

Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom. (v14)

Of course, we cannot deny God’s hand in this.

What about us Christians? What about us followers of Jesus? What lessons can we learn from this passage? I am one who used to think I was very clever. I seldom listen to others. Today, I appreciate all the wise counsels I can get from the people around me.

Do not lean unto our own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5, 6). When time permits, it is always good to get advice from others. You know who they are. They are those you can trust. They are the people who trust you.

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, thank you for your constant guidance and protection, even when our plans do not seem to work. Help us to make our decisions with wisdom. We trust that you will establish our steps according to your divine purpose. In the name of Jesus, amen.
