What can you do when you feel abandoned or broken? Lamentations 1 offers a raw and honest portrayal of grief, reminding us to turn to God even in our most painful moments.

Jerusalem is in a sad state after its destruction. The city is desolate. The people of Judah are grieving not only the loss of their city but also their broken relationship with God. And all these are due to their unfaithfulness. We can see this in the opening verse.

“How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.”

The people are in deep sorrow as they experience the consequences of their rebellion. Jerusalem’s fall represents the brokenness that comes when we turn our backs to God. Yet, in this deep lament, we are reminded we still can cry out to God. He listens to our pain and invites us to return to him.

How do you respond when you are in deep sorrow or loss, when what you love is no longer with you? Which areas in your life that you need to cry out to God for healing and restoration? What is stopping you from crying out to God? Spend some time today to ponder over this.

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, in my brokenness, help me to turn to you. Even when I feel abandoned, remind me that you are near and ready to heal and restore. Give me the strength to trust you through my grief. In pay in the name of Jesus. Amen.
