Taking into consideration how short it can be, what is the meaning of life? Psalm 90 contrasts human mortality with God’s eternity.

Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses. Some of us are familiar with Psalm 90, especially verses 10 and 12. It starts off by acknowledging God as our eternal refuge. It follows with the brevity and the fragility of life.

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (verse 12)

Even though life is short, when we live with an eternal perspective, our days have meaning. We are told our time on earth is short and that is why we want to live each day to the fullest, doing all we can to please God. Instead of being afraid of how short life is, we are encouraged to use wisely the time we have been given. We want to honour God, we want to love others, and we want to make an impact in the Kingdom of God.

Psalm 90 offers us a way to find security in God’s eternal nature. His faithfulness lasts through every season. When we place our trust in him, we gain wisdom for how to live each day meaningfully.

Are you counting your days with worry and fear? Do you think every new day is one day closer to your demise? Or do you thank God for another new day to touch lives, to change lives, and to honour God?

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, teach me to live with a heart of wisdom. Help me to see the value of each day. Help me to live in a way that honours you. May I find refuge in your eternal presence. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
