In Dan 9, we read that Daniel offers a heartfelt prayer of repentance on behalf of Israel. We see God’s faithfulness to his covenant, even when Israel was unfaithful. Daniel knows from the prophecy that the exile would last 80 years. He prays fervently for God to forgive the sins of his people and to restore Jerusalem.
“We have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands” (verse 5)
Daniel appeals to God’s mercy not based on the righteousness of Israel, but on God’s steadfast love and promise. Once again, we are reminded to wait for God’s perfect timing. His compassion is greater than our failings.
What can we learn from Dan 9? For starters, repentance. Daniel gave us a good model for prayers. We must come humbly before God to confess our sins and to acknowledge that we need God’s mercy and forgiveness. Next, we trust in God’s promises. Even when we falter, even when we fall, God’s promises still remain. We can pray with confidence that God is faithful to fulfil his Word. Last but not least, intercede for others. Daniel interceded on behalf of his nation. We are called to pray for others, asking God to bring healing and restoration.
“The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him” (verse 9).
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, I come before you in repentance, acknowledging my sin and asking for your mercy. Thank you for your faithfulness and love. Help me to trust in your promises and intercede for those in need. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
