Ps 115 emphasizes the contrast between the living God and the powerless idols of the nations. There is a call to trust God, who is sovereign and alive, in contrast to the lifeless man-made idols that cannot do anything. Ps 115 begins with a declaration that all glory belongs to God alone. God is loving, faithful, and able to help his people.
Today, we must be careful not to have idols in our lives. Idols are no longer limited to man-made idols of old. When does something become an idol? When it takes precedence over everything else, including our relationship with God, when we love it more than God, when we spend too much time on it while neglecting friends and family, and when we rely on it for help, blessing, and guidance instead of God.
What can we learn from Ps 115? First and foremost, reject idolatry. We are often tempted to place our trust in material things, success, careers, or people. We are to rely on God alone. Secondly, glorify God. We are called to live in a way that give glory to God for the blessings in our lives. Thirdly, trust in God’s power. When we face challenges, trust in the power and providence of the living God.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, I praise you for your glory, love, and faithfulness. Help me to trust in you alone, turning away from anything that distracts me from your power. May my life bring glory to your name. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
