I Do Not Know How to Love

Love is not always easy. Sometimes, it feels downright impossible. We may think, I can love everyone, except this person and that prison. We should love them as well – all those who are difficult, distant, hurtful, those we consider “enemies”.

However, 1 John 4:7-8 reminds us, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

This is both a challenge and a comfort. We are called to love, that is the challenge. Love is from God, that is the comfort. Love is not something we conjure up on our own, it flows from God! When we feel incapable of love, we turn to the source of love – our God.

His love transforms us, enabling us to extend grace, patience, and kindness even when it is difficult. Loving others, including – and especially – those unlovable, reflects God’s love. It is not about perfection but surrender. When we abide in him, his love spills over into our relationship.

If you are struggling to love today, know that you do not have to figure it out on your own.

Draw near to God. Cling to God. Let his love guide you. After all, love is not what we do nor is it how we feel. It is who he is. Through him, we can love others, even when it is hard.

Have you loved someone today?
