When the News Weighs You Down

A Nobel Laureate is kept up at night, thinking about what AGI (artificial general intelligences) will become in five to ten years. A hardline politician claimed his country belongs to one race. A person to assist with a money laundering investigation got abducted on the way.

These days, it feels like every headline is heavy – unceasing wars, natural and manmade disasters, corruption, suffering. Even as a Christian, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed. You might wonder where God is in all this and what he is doing about it. You may feel your hope thinning under the weight of bad news.

But Scripture reminds us: fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:2). He never promised life would be easy, but he did promise his presence. He walked through storms, betrayal, and death – and overcame them all. That is the Jesus we follow. That is the Jesus we live for.

So, when the world feels like it is falling apart, do not stare at the storm. Look to the One who calms it. Pray. Rest. Speak truth. Be the light. He has not forgotten us. He is still in control.

Your heart was not made to carry the weight of the world – so, don’t. Instead, surrender it daily to the One who already has. Keep your eyes on him. Stay rooted in his Word. Let your hope be built not on news updates, but on the unchanging character of God.

Tonight, as you lay your head down, may his peace guard your mind and heart. Sleep well. He is still on the throne. Good night.
