The Gift and Risk of Having a Car

Lately, I’ve been seeing many car accident videos – I get a lot of dashcam videos from Reddit. A car runs a red light and crashes into oncoming traffic. A bus accident with 15 casualties. A lane-splitting motorcycle hits a pedestrian. And just today, a video came through on WhatsApp: a car at Parklane, OUG, plunges from the third floor of a multi-storey carpark because the carwash staff hit the gas instead of the brake.

A vehicle is a privilege. A car brings convenience. It gives us freedom. Some even come with comfort. However, we must remember it is also responsibility. I am not talking about maintaining the car and keeping it clean. I am talking about being responsible on the road. Every time we get behind the wheel, we are in control of something that weights over one ton and moves very fast. If you remember what you learn in physics class, you know that is a potent combination. Mistakes are not just personal – they can cost lives.

I am not a saint on the road. I get angry. Drivers changing lanes without signalling. Motorcyclists weaving between cars. I always keep my distance. I must remain calm. In the end, I do not want to get into any troubles. I do not want to cause harm. I do not want to be harmed. I do not want to be a story in someone’s feed.

Even if no one knows this driver is a Christian, I know God is watching. And I will make him proud in the safe and courteous way I drive.

Furthermore, Ben needs me. That thought keeps me grounded. I need to get home safely. For his sake, and for mine, I choose caution. Every time.
