I Need to Save My Skin

I must start this post with an apology. I lost a battle I thought I had under control: I got cellulitis again. I took a memetic arrow to the knee.

It is humbling and, frankly, a bit frustrating to be back in this position so soon after the last bout. When I told my son about it after seeing a doctor, his first question was practical and direct: “Did you ask the doctor how to prevent it this time?”

I had to admit that I didn’t. In the moment of pain and treatment, I was focused on the cure rather than the cause. I also had to be honest with him about my environment; I haven’t been keeping the house as clean as I should, which creates an uphill battle for my health.

This prompted me to go on a mission to understand how to stop this cycle. Here is what I’ve learned about “saving my skin” and preventing cellulitis from making an unwanted comeback.

1. The Golden Rule: Keep the Barrier Intact

Cellulitis isn’t something you “catch” like a cold; it’s an infection that happens when bacteria – which live naturally on our skin – find a way inside.

The Goal

Think of your skin as a protective suit. The most important thing is to keep that suit intact. Even the tiniest scratch, insect bite, or “invisible” crack from dry skin can act as an open door for bacteria.

How to Achieve

Treat every small cut or scrape immediately with antiseptic cream. Don’t wait for it to look “bad” before you pay attention to it.

2. Hygiene and the “Socks” Strategy

I googled whether wearing socks helps prevent cellulitis. The answer is yes, but not for the reasons you might think.

Why Socks Work

They provide a physical layer of protection against minor scrapes and keep your feet away from floor-borne bacteria. However, socks are only effective if they are clean and changed daily.

Leg Hygiene

The research is clear – regularly washing your legs and feet is non-negotiable. By washing with mild soap, you are physically removing the bacteria load that is sitting on the surface waiting for a chance to enter. I am thinking of wiping them with anti-bacterial wet wipes too.

Moisturize to Shield

One of the biggest culprits in recurring cellulitis is dry, peeling skin. When skin becomes too dry, it develops microscopic cracks.

The Science

Bacteria love these cracks.

The Solution

Apply a good quality moisturizer daily, especially on your legs and feet. This keeps the skin supple and prevents the “cracking” that leads to infection. It’s not about vanity; it’s about medical defence.

Environmental Stewardship

I mentioned to my son that my house hasn’t been clean enough. Our environment plays a significant role in our skin health.

Clean Floors, Clean Body

Dust and grime carry the very bacteria we are trying to avoid. Keeping your living space clean reduces the “bacterial pressure” on your body.

What We Do

Focus on the areas where your bare skin or feet most frequently touch – carpets, rugs, and bathroom floors. Jesse often reminded me to sanitize the desk for I spent the most hours at the desk.

If anything, I should keep the house clean for Ben.

A Summary Checklist

If you struggle with recurring skin infections, here is your daily “Skin Defence” protocol:

  • Wash: Clean legs and feet daily to remove bacteria.
  • Dry: Ensure you dry thoroughly between toes to prevent fungal growth (which also breaks the skin).
  • Moisturize: Use a fragrance-free lotion to prevent cracks.
  • Protect: Wear clean socks and shoes to avoid minor trauma.
  • Inspect: Check your legs daily for any redness, heat, or new scratches.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of this body and the skin that protects me. Forgive me for the many times I have neglected to care for the temple You have given me. Grant me the discipline to maintain a clean environment and the wisdom to care for my health (and Ben’s) daily. I ask for Your healing hand over my current infection and the strength to prevent it from returning. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
