Introduction

We’ve explored the amazing fruits that can grow from consistent prayer and devotion, but what happens when life gets in the way? The project nearing deadline. The newborn baby. Moving to a new house. Wife passing away. When unexpected challenges arise, it’s easy to feel discouraged or even give up on our spiritual growth journey. Today, let’s talk about overcoming setbacks and staying committed to your prayer and devotion practice.

Identify Your Why

When faced with a setback, take time to reflect on why you started this journey in the first place. What are your goals? What do you hope to achieve through consistent prayer and devotion? Why are you doing it? If you say it is because you love God, you are on the right track.

Be Gentle with Yourself

Remember that setbacks are a normal part of life. You missed your Bible reading today. You prayed 5 minutes shorted than usual. You scribbled (or typed) only two lines in your daily journal. Don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned. Instead, focus on getting back on track rather than beating yourself up over past mistakes.

Adjust Your Approach

Life is unpredictable, and what works one day might not work the next. Be willing to adjust your approach to prayer and devotion if needed. If 6 in the morning is getting hard, then try 15 past 6. Try new methods or tools that can help you stay connected with God despite life’s challenges.

Find Accountability

Having a support system in place can make all the difference when facing setbacks. Share your struggles with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor and ask for their encouragement and guidance. Mine is far away in Adelaide, Australia.

Celebrate Small Wins

Don’t wait until you’ve overcome every obstacle to celebrate small victories along the way. Acknowledge and rejoice in the progress you’re making, no matter how small it may seem. Have you read the Bible 95 days in a row? Give yourself a treat.

Conclusion

Overcoming setbacks requires patience, self-compassion, and adaptability. By identifying your why, being gentle with yourself, adjusting your approach, finding accountability, and celebrating small wins, you can stay committed to your prayer and devotion practice even when life gets in the way.

I invite you to say this prayer.

My Father in heaven.
Help me stay committed to my prayer and devotion despite life’s challenges. Grant me wisdom to adjust my approach when needed and give me courage to persevere through setbacks. Remind me that every step forward is a victory in Your eyes, no matter how small it may seem. I pray in the name of Jesus, amen.

And thus, we conclude the Soaking Process series. God bless.
