Faith Grows Under Weight

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Rom 5:3-5)
A muscle does not grow from having it easy. It grows when there is resistance, when the weight becomes heavy enough to stretch strength beyond comfort. In the same way, our faith in God often grows most when life feels heavy.
Light weight keeps us comfortable
Lifting 0.5kg dumbbells is easy. You don’t even break a sweat.
When life is smooth, we can go through the motions without needing much trust. Prayer feels simple. We recite what we have been praying every day. Prayer is not accompanied by tears. Prayer is not done on the knees. There is no pain. There is no worry. Faith feels routine. We brush past the 15 minutes and move on to other things that are more important or more exciting. We do not notice how much we rely on ourselves. Comfort does not always produce growth. If anything, it breeds complacency. We expect things to carry on as they do. We are no longer prepared for the time when they do not.
Heavy weight reveals what is real
When you move on to heavier dumbbells, you begin to find out your limit.
Trials press on us in ways that expose our limits. Only then do we realize how absurd it is to think we have things under control. We find ourselves asking hard questions, waiting longer than we hoped, and walking through seasons we would never choose. Yet these are often the very moments when faith becomes real. Our vision is no longer fogged by self-sufficiency. This is the time when we turn to God. When we cannot see the way ahead, we must decide whether we trust God to lead us.
God uses the weight to make us stronger
You grow from 5kg to 10kg. You start to see the difference it makes to your muscles.
What feels like pressure is often part of God’s work in us. He is not wasting the burden. He is shaping endurance, patience, and deeper dependence on Him. The weight may not disappear quickly, but it can produce strength that comfort never could.
So do not be afraid of the heavy season. God may be using it to build something in you that light living never would. The same God who allows the weight also gives grace to carry it. Keep trusting Him. Keep holding on to His hand. In time, you will see that the weight was not there to break you, but to strengthen your faith. It makes you stronger. You will find that you can carry heavier burden.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, help me trust You when life feels heavy. Strengthen my faith through every trial. Teach me to rely on You more each day. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
