A man sits on a bench at the bus station as the sun rises. The crisp morning air turns into the heavy heat of noon, which slowly fades into a cool evening breeze. Throughout the day, dozens of buses pull up. One of them heads straight toward his church. He does not move. A friend pulls over and offers him a lift. He waves him away. By sunset, he is exactly where he started. He had every opportunity to move, but he refused to take the first step.
The Trap of Routine
Physical stagnation is easy to spot. However, spiritual stagnation is far more deceptive. You can attend every Sunday service, flip through your Bible, and recite familiar prayers, yet remain mentally seated on that same bench. Many Christians mistake “going through the motions” for “moving forward”. We often confuse religious activity with actual growth.
Move From Hearing to Doing
True discipleship requires more than just being present at the station. It requires boarding the bus. This means taking an active step of obedience that costs you something – your comfort, your pride, or your schedule. If your spiritual life feels like a repetitive loop, you have likely stopped responding to the prompts of the Holy Spirit.
The Bible warns us against being passive listeners:
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” – James 1:22
Take the Step Today
Identify one “motion” you have been doing on autopilot. Instead of just reading a verse, pick one specific command and execute it before noon. Get off the bench and get on a bus.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, forgive me for sitting still while You are calling me to move. Stir my heart today. Give me the courage to take the next step of obedience. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
