When the Night is Long, the Morning is Kind

I messed up my biological clock a long time ago. No longer did I wake up at 0600 before the alarm sounded. I got up at 0600 consistently. I used to.

A Long Night

It was late at night, and I found it hard to sleep, staring at the ceiling as a heavy, cold wave of helplessness settled over me. My chest felt tight, and my mind kept avoiding all the possible worst-case scenarios. I prayed, whispering words into the dimly lit room, begging for peace, telling myself I just had to learn to accept whatever came. But worry is a stubborn anchor. Needing to voice the weight pressing on my soul, I reached out and shared my deep concerns with my son when I could no longer bear it.

A Kind Morning

In the morning, Ben and I had our walk in the park. I cook his breakfast. He was waiting when I served it. He took it without any delay.

There was Ben, standing by his bowl, diving into his boiled chicken and kibbles with his usual eager appetite, showing zero hesitation. The tension in my shoulders instantly melted. My chest felt lighter. That simple, ordinary morning routine brought an overwhelming sense of relief.

Every Breath He Takes

We worry so easily. We let fear magnify our uncertainties, projecting our anxieties onto the days ahead and forgetting that life unfolds one moment at a time. My anxiety had been tied to the aging process of my faithful, constant companion—the dog who has walked beside me through the quietest rooms of this house, especially in the years since Kathleen went to be with Jesus and Jesse moved to Adelaide with Andrea. Every shift in his breathing, every cough, and every slow morning whispers a reminder of how fragile our best companionship really is.

Thank God for answering prayer. Thank God for listening to our cries, even when those cries are tangled in the ordinary fears of caring for the ones we love.

Father, when the night feels long and my heart is heavy with worry, grant me the grace to trust You. Thank You for Your quiet presence in the dark, for listening to every anxious whisper, and for the simple mercies of a new morning. I thank you for friendship and companionship. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
