The Pain of the Factory Reset

Doing a factory reset on a hacked phone is a painful experience. You have to reinstall your apps. Consequently, you lose data, old conversations, and photos you will never be able to get back. You must go through the hassle of re-authenticating your banking apps, and there is usually a frustrating waiting period before everything functions normally again.

Ignoring the Malware

However, consider the alternative. If you avoid the reset, if you delay the reset, you let the malware run wild. It steals your personal data. Furthermore, it hijacks your contacts and tries to trick your friends into forking out their money. You must put a stop to this nonsense.

The Biblical Cost of Repentance

The Bible is clear that the cost of repentance is painful. In Matthew 5:29, Jesus uses extreme imagery to make this point: “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”

From this, we learn that God does not sugarcoat the cost of repentance. He is completely holy, and He knows that sin is a spiritual malware that will eventually destroy you and the people around you. When we sin, we hurt ourselves and those around us. Consequently, when we repent, we have to face the reality of the carnage we left behind. We need to humble ourselves to admit our wrongs. Therefore, God demands that we take radical action to stop the destruction.

How We Should Respond

  • Accept the loss: Stop expecting repentance to be easy. Getting right with God often means permanently losing comfortable habits or toxic relationships.
  • Humble yourself: Admit the damage you caused. Face the carnage of your sin without making excuses. Confess your wrongs to God and those you hurt.
  • Take radical action: Do not negotiate with the malware. Cut off whatever is corrupting your spiritual life, no matter how painful it feels in the moment.
  • Endure the rebuild: Trust God through the uncomfortable waiting period as your life is reordered according to His design.

Today’s Truth: The factory reset of repentance is painful, but letting sin run wild is fatal.

Takeaway: There is a price to pay to get back on the right path, and the longer you stray, the higher the cost of repentance becomes.

I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, I confess that my sin hurts both me and the people I love. Give me the humility to admit my wrongs and face the carnage I have caused. Give me the courage to endure the uncomfortable reset rather than letting sin run wild in my life. Help me to pay the price today so I do not face destruction tomorrow. I pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.
