“So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”  (Mt 24:44, NIV)

Across the world, as many as 33 countries encourage their citizens to keep several days of food, water, and essential supplies on hand. This is to prepare for any unexpected natural disasters or cyberattacks. People stock up on power banks, portable stoves, and emergency lighting. Preparing wisely for a physical crisis is not faithless. In fact, it is a practical way to care for our families and neighbours.

However, an emergency kit also raises a much deeper question. If we take such care to prepare for a disruption that may never come, are we giving equal attention to the return of Christ—the certainty God has promised?

What Does Biblical Readiness Look Like?

For Christians, the second coming of Jesus is an absolute promise. Yet, it is never an invitation to speculation or a reason to panic.

Jesus clearly stated that no one knows the day or hour (Matthew 24:36). Therefore, biblical readiness is not about predicting dates, accumulating spiritual merit, or living in constant anxiety. Instead, being ready for the return of Christ means trusting Him today and faithfully carrying out what He has assigned to us.

Our physical emergency supplies actually point us toward far deeper spiritual provisions.

3 Lessons from Emergency Supplies on Spiritual Readiness

1. A Secure Shelter Points to Our Ultimate Refuge

A sturdy roof reminds us that our true security cannot rely on a house, a savings account, or a government plan.

As the Psalmist writes, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1, NIV). Prudent emergency plans have their place, but they can never produce the deep, abiding peace that Jesus offers.

2. Food and Water Point to Eternal Sustenance

Physical survival is not the whole of life. Jesus declared that He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35), and He alone satisfies our deepest thirst.

While we store canned goods for physical emergencies, we must feed daily on His Word, draw near in prayer, and rely on His grace rather than our own limited resources.

3. Power Banks Point to Our Daily Need to Abide

We cannot run indefinitely on our own battery. Jesus reminded His followers, “Remain in me … apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4–, NIV).

Spiritual vitality does not happen by accident. It comes through abiding in Him daily—through worship, Scripture, prayer, obedience, Christian fellowship, and the renewing work of the Holy Spirit.

How to Prepare Daily for the Return of Christ

How should we live as we wait? Begin by ensuring your hope rests entirely in Jesus Himself, rather than in your personal performance. Turn to Him daily in repentance and faith.

As C.S. Lewis noted regarding Christ’s return, the essential task is not to guess the timing, but to ensure that whenever He arrives, He finds us faithfully doing our work.

You can practice daily readiness through simple, consistent actions:

  • Confess sin quickly and keep short accounts with God.
  • Reconcile with others whenever possible.
  • Practice intentional generosity toward those in need.
  • Encourage fellow believers in their walk.
  • Share the living hope of the gospel.

Keep your lamp trimmed and burning—not through frantic, last-minute effort, but through a quiet lifetime of walking with Him.

Physical supplies may sustain us for a few days, but Christ gives life that outlasts every earthly crisis.

Wise physical preparation protects our earthly lives, but daily abiding in Christ prepares our souls for eternity.

Big Idea

Real readiness is not about hoarding supplies for tomorrow, but abiding in the Saviour who holds all our tomorrows.

I invite you to say this prayer of readiness.
Father, free me from both complacency and fear. Teach me to find my security in You, to receive life from You, and to abide in You daily. Make me faithful in small things, generous toward others, and ready for the return of Christ with joy. I pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.
