Greetings. We continue our Bible reading with 1 Sam 12 today. Fresh off a victory against the Ammonites, Samuel spelled out clearly what it meant to have a human king. The Israelites were too enamored with their new king, everything was ok. If I were Samuel, I’d be thinking, just you wait, you don’t know what you are getting into.
Samuel impresses me when he asked the Israelites whether he wronged any of them. Did he take anything he should not? Did he cheat anyone? Was he on the take? Did he betray the trust of the people? Saul was not so self-presumptuous that he declared himself to be blameless. Instead, he subjected himself to the judgement of the people. So, did he? The people responded with a resounding no. Samuel did not wrong them.
Samuel learned to listen to God since young. He lived an upright life. This is acknowledged by the people.
Isn’t that kind of life we want to live? Don’t you want to set a good example for your children, students, mentees, or proteges? I imagine Samuel can sleep well at night. He did not have to spend any moment awake worrying about being exposed. There was nothing to be exposed!
Be like Samuel. Give glory to God.
