Greetings, we come to the last reading of the week. Today, we read Psalm 59. David was facing a lot of enemies who are evil, conspiring, merciless, and wicked. He pray to God for protection from these enemies. He told God all the enemies’ schemes and attacks and pleaded for God to intervene. He put his trust in God and acknowledge God as his strength, his fortress and that God went before Him. He believe God is just and will judge the enemies. He praised God for his deliverence and the ultimate victory.
In this psalm of David, God is recognized as a protector and deliverer from enemies. Who are some of the enemies you have? The conniving colleague who will not hesitate to stab you at the back? The annoying neighbour who gets under your skin without even trying? The relative who does not give up any opportunities to flaunt his wealth? The BFF who betrayed you? The one who robs the nation? The one who pretends to be a saviour but is not doing anything of use? How do you respond to your enemies’ attacks? Do you curse them? Do you pray to God that everytime they drive on the road, the car in front of them will be driving slower than they can tolerate? Do you pray that they cannot find an empty parking space easily? Do you pray – gulp – that harm shall come upon them?
The God we serve is righteous. He is just. One day, he will judge the living and the dead. We need to believe justice will be serve one day. We need to believe God will deliver us from our enemies. No, the fact that your enemies are still alive does not mean God is not doing anything. We need to come to God in prayer when we face enemies and challenges.
Be like David. Faced with so many enemies, he chose to trust God. He chose to praise God. We are even told to love our enemies. Pray for them. Pray that they will know Jesus and accept Jesus. Whether they become nice to you after that is immaterial.
