Does the end justify the means?
In 1 Sam 21, we saw David on the run for his life. Driven by fear, he had a momentary lapse of judgement and resorted to deception. While hiding from the king, he manipulated Ahimelech the priest. He pretended he was on a secret mission on Saul’s command. He also took the consecrated breads. Did he get away? He did. However, we should take this as a cautionary tale, highlighting the dangers of dishonesty and the importance of trusting in God instead.
1 Samuel 21 paints a complex picture of David on the run, driven by fear and resorting to deception. While seeking refuge from King Saul, he manipulates the priest Ahimelech and feigns a mission on Saul’s behalf. Though he receives temporary assistance, the chapter unfolds as a cautionary tale, highlighting the dangers of dishonesty and the importance of trusting God’s provision.
I think we are most creative in school when we are asked by the teacher why we did not do our homework. The save our own skin (and the avoid the cane on the palm), we could and would come up with all kinds of stories, which the teacher could always see through.
There are consequences to any acts deception, even when driven by fear or seemingly justified circumstances. We all must bear responsibility to the words we utter, the decisions we make, and the actions we take. No man is an island. David’s deception put Ahimelech in danger. We do not live in a vacuum. Please consider carefully the impact to those around us when we make any decisions, especially so when we are in fear or desperation.

Fear and anxiety often cloud our judgements. We may be tempted to take shortcuts. We just want to get ourselves out of the bind. We should instead stay calm and trust God. His way is higher than our ways. God is our ultimate source of protection and providence. Seek his protection and his unfailing love rather that resorting to manipulative tactics.
