Hello. In 1 Sam 25, we see a contrast between Nabal (who is foolish, brash, and impulsive) and his wife, Abigail (who is wise, polite, and discerning.) It shows that a conflict can be resolved with wisdom, grace, and forgiveness.
Let’s look at what Abigail did after her foolish husband push away the men David sent.
Recognize the Danger. She knew who David was and she realize the potential consequences of her husband’s treatment of David’s men. She took the initiative to prevent the impending disaster. She did not wait for disaster to befall her husband’s household.
Acted with Humility and Respect. Nabal was not very clever and diplomatic in the way he dealt with David’s men. He was not grateful. He did not care about his own men’s testimonies concerning what David’s men did. Abigail was different. When she found out what her husband did and heard what the men told him, she approached David with humility and respect. She came bearing gifts. She acknowledged her husband’s wickedness and follies. She acted fast.
Be Generous. Abigail did not stinge. She offered enough provisions to David to ensure his needs were met. It was not a mere token. She showed her understanding and compassion.
What we can learn from Abigail are as follows.
Seek wisdom in tough situations. In a conflict, do not react impulsively. Pray for God’s guidance. Seek wise counsel before making important decisions.
Now, let’s see what David did.
Recognized Abigail’s Wisdom. While David saw Nabal’s lack of wisdom, he saw the wisdom displayed by his wife. He saw the sincerity behind her actions,
Choose Mercy over Violence. David has the means and the motivation to wipe out Nabal’s household. He did not. He chose to extend grace and mercy. Anger and wrath only serve to fuel a conflict and make it worse than it already is.
What can we learn from David?
Be Open to Others. In moments of anger and frustration, we must be willing to listen to different viewpoints. We may very well gain valuable insights that will help us make the right decisions. Do not shut down others before we hear what they have to say.
Choose Mercy, Grace, and Forgiveness. David chose mercy here. He chose to forgive. We must remember that forgiveness and compassion are more powerful than revenge.
In what recent situations did you find it hard to choose wisdom, grace, and forgiveness? How did you overcome it?
