When you are faced with a difficult decision which has dire consequences, what are the key factors affecting your decision? Law? Moral? Convenience? The biggest possible reward / profit? The least problems?
For David, it’s obedience to God and to do God’s will. In 1 Sam 26, David had another chance to get rid of Saul, the king who wanted his life. (In 1 Sam 24, David had a chance in a cave near the Desert of En Gedi.) However, David had unwavering trust in God, and he was fully committed to upholding morality. Being presented twice the opportunity to kill Saul, he chose not to do so to honour God’s anointing and spared Saul’s life.
Today, “touch not the Lord’s anointed” have been misused by false teachers, false prophets, self-proclaimed men of God to deflect criticisms. These wolves in sheepskins tried to justify their departure from God’s Words by proclaiming themselves beyond reproach.
Let’s get back to David. What can we observe and learn from David in 1 Sam 26?
Trust God’s Timing. Even in face of injustice and unrighteousnes, we trust that our God reigns. He is in charge. He has a plan. He will vindicate you in his perfect timing.
Take the High Road. Do not compromise your integrity for revenge. Uphold moral principles and demonstrate true strength even when it is difficult.
Leave it to God. We focus on our Christian walk. We focus on living righteously. Let God handle the consequences of the wrongdoing of others. It does not mean we are doormats. We point out when we see something is wrong. We are sheep and we follow our Shepherd.
