Good morning. We can feel David’s overflowing and deep longing for God in Psalm 63. He was in a desert. And he was in a spell of spiritual dryness. He thirsted for God.
Recognize Your Thirst. I had a former colleague who avoid drinking water to avoid trips to the toilet. I am not going to talk about the impact on her health. However, we need to recognize when we are thirsty. That is our body telling us we need water. Ben (my dog) drinks a lot of water. I refill his water bowl whenever I can remember. When I see a dry bowl in the morning, I’d be kicking myself for not providing enough water for him. In Psalm 63, we see David longed for God. We need to recognize and acknowledge our spritual thirst and hunger. Do not be shy to express our yearning for God’s presence in prayer.
Seek God First. God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in him, said John Piper. From Psalm 63, we see God as the primary source of David’s satisfaction. Make God a priority in your life, not just an important part. Have the discipline to make time for God every day. Pray, read the Bible, wait on him, reflect, meditate. It is easier if we can do this at the same time every day. Delight in his presence. David worshipped God in a dry land. We can worship God no matter what our circumstances are.
Reflect God’s Love. David did not just desire for God to quench his thirst and for the “richest of foods”. He recognized God’s love is better than life. He loved God more than what God gave. He loved God for who God is. Likewise, we want to live a life that reflect God’s character. We want to draw all men unto him.
Consider for a moment your current spiritual state. Would you describe it as overflowing with a well of water? Or would you say it is a tad dry? Do you maintain a deep connection to God? What practical steps can you take to cultivate a closer relationship with God? In what way can you express your love and gratitude to God?
