We see in Psalm 20 an unwavering trust in God as the source of strength and victory.

Seeking God in Times of Trouble. The psalm opens with a familiar cry, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Imagine God forsaking us. Imagine we call and he does not hear. That is a fate more terrible than death. However, God does not forsake us. This is a reminder that we can turn to God in prayer, even when we face difficulties. The psalmist assures us that God’s presence and protection are always there, regardless of the situation. We can be assured of security and hope in God’s faithfulness.

Trusting in God’s Power. Some may trust in horses, some may trust in chariots but we will trust in the name of the LORD! Instead of relying on human resources, we should trust in God’s name. Victory comes from God, not from might.

Finding Joy in God’s Provision. The psalmist expressed gratitude for answered prayers. We should be encouraged to acknowledge God’s blessings and rejoice in his goodness. Go tell it to the mountains! Do not keep it to yourself. Pass it on!

How do you normally respond to difficult situations? Do you plunge head on? Do you retreat? Do you seek help from friends and family? Do you immediately turn to God? Think of times when you experienced God’s help and protection and provision. Are there areas in your life where you place more trust (whether instinctively or otherwise) in human than in God? How can you cultivate a consistent attitude of gratitude for the blessings and victories you received from God?
