Hello. 2 Samuel 11 is a tragedy. The man after God’s heart faced temptation. And he succumbed to it. It began with staying back from the battle and it started a string of bad decisions and even worse actions. Failure to guard one’s heart for just a moment brought devastating consequences.
“But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.” – 2 Samuel 11:27b (NIV)
Stay Vigilant. If you play Pokémon Go or Monster Hunter Now, you are always warned to be aware of your surroundings. Similarly, we need to be aware of the situations and decisions that may lead to temptations. Stay away from places, people, or circumstances that may cause you to waver or stumble. Stay on the straight and narrow.
Guard Your Heart. Besides avoiding bad influence, we ought to keep our heart pure by regularly spending time in Bible reading, prayer, and seeking God’s counsel. Let the Word shape your thoughts, words, decisions, desires, actions, attitude. Do not let a momentarily lapse court destructions.
Seek Accountability. To take it one step further, surround yourself with trusted friends or mentors who can provide support and accountability. Within this band of brothers or soiree of sisters, you can share your struggles and be open to receiving guidance and corrections. Be careful, though. Do not wear your heart on your sleeve. Know who you can trust.
Repent and Seek Forgiveness. If we fall, if we stumble, if we sin, do not try to hide it or cover it up. It will lead to more sins. Confess our sins to God. Seek forgiveness from God. Repent. Turn away from sins and turn back to God. Take steps to reconcile with God.
2 Sam 11 teaches us that no one is immune to temptation, not even the most faithful. If we think we cannot fall, we are being arrogant. As such, we need accountability, humility, and constant reliance on God’s strength to resist temptation and live righteously.
Do say this prayer if you want.
“Father in Heaven, I acknowledge my need for Your strength and guidance to resist temptation and live a life that pleases You. Help me to stay alert, to guard my heart, and to seek accountability. When I fall short, lead me to repentance and forgiveness. Thank You for Your unfailing love and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
Do not take temptations likely.
