You are in the wasteland. Darkness surrounds you. The cold desert wind is howling non-stop. There is no one within the vicinity. Your phone shows zero bar. No one can hear you. Even Good seems distant. When you think of the sins you committed, guilt and remorse and shame fill you. That is probably about how David felt.
Psalm 38 is an expression of David’s pain and despair when he was confronted by prophet Nathan for his sin. David was in deep regret when he realized the magnitude of sins he committed. He was devastated. He was overwhelmed by all kinds of sufferings due to his sin. He felt God has left him. Despite his great despair, he did not allow himself to wallow in pain. Instead, he turned to God and pled for God’s mercy and restoration.
Honesty with God. David did not hide his feelings. He did not sugarcoat how he felt. It will be foolish to hide from God. Be honest with God about our struggles, doubts, and pain. Allow him to work in our lives.
Acknowledging Sin. Weaving through David’s lament is the recognition of his sin. That is the first step towards repentance and reconciliation with God. We can come to God with our sins and shortcomings and seek his forgiveness.
Trusting in God’s Mercy. David felt distance from God. He pled for God’s mercy and healing. This reminds us to hold onto our hope and trust in God’s unfailing love, even in the darkest hours.
Is there a burden you have been struggling with, but you hesitate to bring before God? What steps can you take to cultivate a more honest and open prayer life? Is there an area you fall short, and you need acknowledge before God to seek for forgiveness?
You can say this prayer if you want.
Father, when burdens weigh us down and doubts cloud our minds, give us the courage to be honest with you. Help us to acknowledge our sin and seek your forgiveness. Help us not to sin anymore. Remind us of your unfailing love and mercy and grant us the strength and healing we need to move forward. In the name of Jesus name, Amen.
