Having it all

Let’s consider some rhetorical questions. If you had unlimited resources, what would you do? What would you get yourself? What cause would you support? What cause would you initiate? Who would you help? Who would you want to teach a lesson?

All those questions are predicated on the premise that you have it all. What does it mean to have it all for you?

In the past, even though I could not really have-it-all, I had the-most-that-I-could-have. I used the latest flagship mobile phone. I used the latest version of Windows and Microsoft Office. I even did beta test on Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2000 before they were released. I lived at the bleeding edge of technology.

The three of us had three cars. Granted, they were all national cars. Before I lost my job, I bought what I wanted. We paid for the software and games and apps we used. I got a Samsung Jet. I shared before I got an electric oven, a super-duper juicer, and an air-fryer, all still in their boxes.

The definition of “having it all” has changed for me over time. Having it all is no longer my objective. I do not even want “having most of it.”

“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” (Phil 4:12)

I have a deeper and more personal understanding of what Paul said.

If in the past, I had the ability to acquire what I wanted, now I would just live humbly. I found that I am more content now compared to the past. It is not about what we can get or what we have. It’s about living within our means. It is about living a life closer to God.  The less time I spent with what I have, the more time I have with God.

Do I have it all now? Far be it. However, I have a clearer understanding that I have God in my life. I will not give that up for anything.
