In cartoons or even movies, we often see this scene. The protagonist faced a difficult moral decision. A tiny angelic version of him appeared on one side of his ear, telling them to do the right thing. Another tiny devilish version of him appeared on the other side, telling him to just do what he wanted to do.
2 Sam 16 paints a picture of the destructive power of unbridled ambition. Absalom is consumed by his desire for the throne. He seeks and readily accepts the wicked counsel of Ahithophel. Absalom probably knows what kind of counsel he will receive. He just wants to get the support and affirmation for what he plans to do. He brings shame to his father. What he does ultimately leads to disaster.
We have access to all kinds of advice. Some of them come without being asked. Some of them tell us to do what is right, what is pleasing to God, what honours God. They care about you. They want what’s good for you.
Some of them tell us to just follow our heart and desire and to do what gives us the most benefit. Forget about moral, ethics, or God’s law. These voices, like Ahithophel, often masquerade as helpful advice. Yet, their true intent is to lead us astray.
We need to be intentional to discern true guidance from deceptive whispers. To reduce the chances of getting bad counsel, we should surround ourselves with trusted advisors who is not afraid speak the truth, even when it upsets you. Most importantly, we must have a good relationship with God. We should see his wisdom through prayer and studying his word.
You are invited to say this prayer.
All-knowing Father, help us to discern the difference between wise counsel and tempting whispers. Grant us the wisdom to discern those who speak truth. Give us the courage to reject voices that lead us astray. May your word be a lamp to our feet and light to our path. In the name of Jesus, amen.
