You put down the book. It is the second one you read today. You took a sip of the cool pink lemonade. You look out the window and appreciate the lush green in your garden. You are happy with the books you read. You enjoyed your lunch. Yet, there is a yearning for something more, a profound longing to connect to something or someone greater.
And this longing is beautifully captured in Psalm 42. The Sons of Korah use powerful imagery of a deer desperately seeking water to describe their yearning for God’s presence.
“As the deer pants for the streams of water, So my soul pants for you, my God.” (verse 1)
And it is not about a physical thirst. It is a metaphor for a deep spiritual longing. God created us to be in a relationship with him. When we drift apart from God, it creates a profound emptiness. And when that happens, it is time to examine our relationship with God.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father,
In those moments when I feel far from you, help us remember the depth of your love. Like the deer thirsts for water, may our souls yearn for your presence. Draw me close to You, Abba Father, and fill us with the living water. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
