Do you remember the time when you were in dire need, and someone extended you a helping hand? They walked the extra mile to help you through a tough time. How did their generosity inspire you?
If you were to mention Barzillai, it probably does not ring a bell with your friends. Today, we read about Barzillai in 2 Sam 19. He is a wealthy man from Gilead. He shows great generosity towards King David during a time of great personal and political struggle. Despite David’s unenviable situation, Barzillai provides for him and his men.
It is quite easy to be nice to someone who is doing well. It is hard to give a hand to someone who is down and out.
Barzillai’s generosity was not motivated by personal gain or a desire for recognition. True generosity is reflected in Rom 12:9 – it comes from a genuine love for others and a desire to do good.
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. (Romans 12:9)
I invite you to say this prayer.
Dear Father, Thank you for the gift of generous people like Barzillai. Inspire us to follow their example by showing genuine love and care for those in need. May our hearts be open to helping others, not for personal gain, but out of a love for you and your good purposes in the world. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
