You have always considered yourself a person of faith, but lately, your prayers seem to bounce back from the ceiling. In the past, no matter what you faced, you found strength in God’s comforting presence. Now, all you feel is the emptiness in the room. You are confused. Why is God so far away?
In Psalm 61, David cries his heart out to God. He is not having a good time. He plead to God to hear his prayer. He is convinced God is his refuge. “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)
The enemies may come with their thousands, their chariots, and their horses, we are safe within the fortified walls of the mighty fortress that is our God. “because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4b)
Do you feel vulnerable? Do you feel helpless? You are perplexed. You do not know where to turn to. You are in a tunnel, and you cannot see anything. You are disoriented and you cannot tell which direction to go. You do not know what to do.
Turn to God. Seek his face. Pray. That is what you do.
“Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.” (verse 1)
It is good to have strong locks. It is good to have CCTV. It is good to activate the alarm before you sleep. It is better to have a dog at home. It is best to have God in your life. He is your refuge. He is your peace. He is the reason you can sleep tight at night.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, I place my trust in you. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me. You are my refuge. You are my strong tower. Hear my cry. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
