We begin with 1 Kings today. After years of running from his enemies and subsequently overcoming them, David was near the end of his reign (and life.) It was the time for him to step down and pass the torch. However, another one of his sons caused problems. Adonijah, the fourth son of David, born of Haggith, decided he wanted to ascend to the throne.
“His father had never at any time displeased him by asking, ‘Why have you done thus and so?’ He was also a very handsome man, and he was born next after Absalom.” (verse 6)
We read the root cause of the problem. David did not teach Adonijah well. He never corrected him. As a result, Adonijah grew unhinged. His pride and rebellion grew unchecked. He became entitled and he even wanted to seize the throne from his father.
We are parents, mentors, leaders, teachers to someone in one way or another. How we guide them and teach them has a profound impact on their character development and future. David failed to discipline Adonijah. This led to Adonijah to assume he deserved to be king, this bringing strife not only to the household of David but the entire kingdom.
The Bible makes clear the importance of discipline. Proverbs 13:24 and 19:18 are examples. When we administer discipline with love, patience, and wisdom, it is vital for developing integrity, responsibility, and humility.
Similarly, we must be willing to receive corrections. It may be challenging as it requires humility and a willingness to chance. It needs what is called a teachable spirit. It is through this process that we grow and mature in our faith.
Think of the areas in your life where you might need correction. Consider where you can and need to provide guidance to others.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Heavenly Father, I come before you, acknowledging the importance of discipline in my life. Help me to receive correction with humility and to administer it with love and wisdom. Give me the discernment to guide those under my sphere of influence in a way that honours You. May my actions and decisions reflect your will and lead to growth and maturity in faith. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
