The harbourmaster told you to expect a calm sea and clear weather. However, the storm tonight seems to be the biggest you have ever experience. The strong waves tossed your ship incessantly, threatening to sink it to the bottom of the sea any moment now. Your loyal and hardy sailors have been working hard to prevent just that. All hands have been on deck for more than 24 hours. You could not tell the direction in this pitch-dark night. Suddenly, you seem to spot something. You blinked and looked again. Yes, it was a light. It was a light house! You told your first mate to steer your vessel towards the light. You should be safe. You might live to see another day.
Have you ever felt lost? You look at the streets and you do not know where to go. You have considered all options, and you do not see any way out of the mess you are in. What can you do? What should you do?
David wrote Psalm 72 for his son, Solomon. We read David’s deep desire for a Solomon to be a ruler filled with God’s wisdom and righteousness. Wisdom is not mere intellectual knowledge. Rather, it is a value system that guides our decisions and actions. David recognizes the effect of this kind of wisdom.
Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. (verses 1 and 2)
David’s please for divine wisdom for Solomon, who would be king, shows its crucial role in a just society where the needs of all people are met with fairness and compassion.
Wisdom from God provides clarity and direction to help us navigate the many complex situations in our life journey. A wise heart values fairness and strive to support those who are vulnerable. A wise person tends to promote harmony and understanding. It seeks to reduce conflict and foster peace.
How can we get wisdom from God? We pray. We read the Bible. We meditate on the Word of God. This will help us to align our hearts with the will of God. Stick with godly people. They can provide valuable counsels and perspectives.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, I thank you for the gift of wisdom and guidance. Just as Solomon asked for wisdom to lead his people, I seek your wisdom in my life. Grant me understanding and discernment, so I can act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you. Help me to be an instrument of your peace and justice in this world. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
