Your word is a lamp for my feet, A light on my path. (verse 105)
Greetings! We begin this week’s reading with Psalm 119:105-144. We are heading into the 8th month on the 2024 DUMC Bible Reading Plan.
Today’s reading is about Gods Word and the guidance, righteousness, and comfort it brings. Right off the bat of this passage, the palmistry makes it clear that God’s Word illuminated out path and provides direction in our lives.
There will be trials and challenges as we try to follow his commandments (verses 106-112.) The psalmist reminds us that obedience to God’s law requires dedication. When we have difficulties, it’s easier to just give up. However, it is by sticking to his Word steadfastly that keeps us align to his will. And we want to be aligned to his will.
The palmist praises God’s justice and righteousness and he describes his lead as perfect, trustworthy, and everlasting. This gives us hope on a world that is wicked to the core. As Christians, we do not just read the Bible, we want to love the Word of God. We want to live and breathe the Word of God. In this way, we can hope to live a life of purity and peace.
The world does not like Jesus. The world is not our friend. We often have to choose between God and the world. Rest assured that God’s commandments are not burdensome. Instead, it is life giving. It protects us from evil, it guides is in life’s narrow way, and it brings us closer to him.
We love poetry because of its beauty. We loved fiction because it lets our imagination run wild. We love nonfiction because it helps us to be smarter. We love horror because it gives us adrenaline rush. The more we should love the Word of God as it gives life.
I invite you to say this prayer.
My Father in heaven, I thank you for your Word, which is like a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Help me to love and obey your commandments with all my heart. Give me strength to follow your ways, even in trials, especially during trials. May your righteous laws guide me and change me, drawing me closer to you. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
