In your presence, there is fullness of joy.
At your right hand, there are pleasures every more.
You surround us with your favour, O Lord.
The earth if full of your goodness.
The earth is filled with your love.
Are you familiar with this worship song?
As with Psalm 132, Psalm 84 is an expression of longing for the presence of God. Anyone who has ever sought solace and refuge in the presence of God can relate to Psalm 84, particularly the two opening verses.
“How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.” (verses 1, 2)
The psalm continues to describe the blessings for those who dwell in the house of God – they receive strength and peace. The pilgrimage mentioned in verse five reminds us that our journey with God is ongoing and our destiny lies with God. When we are with God, we are home.
I pray that when we meditate on Psalm 84, we are reminded of the exceeding joy and fulfilment that come from seeking God and abiding in his presence. In our world that is full of distractions and challengers, putting aside time to dwell and rest in God’s presence give us brings renewal and strength.
I invite you to say this prayer.
My Father, thank you for the joy and peace found in your presence. Help me to seek you earnestly and to find my strength and comfort in you. May my heart always yearn for your courts, and may I praise you in calmness and in storm. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
