In 1 Kings 12, the erstwhile united kingdom split into two, becoming the divided kingdom. In the north is Israel led by Jeroboam while Solomon’s son, Rehoboam reign over Judah in the south. (I remember this by NIJ and SJR.)

Rehoboam refused to listen to the wise counsel of his elders. Rather, he opted for the arrogant advice of his young peers. This decision has the catastrophic consequence of the people rebelling and forming a new kingdom under Jeroboam.

Solomon’s idolatry draws a wedge between him and God. Disobedience to God’s commandments resulted in the division of Israel. His son’s arrogance makes the situation worse. We see from this event the importance of wise leadership.

As we reflect on today’s reading, let us pray for two things. One, pray for leaders to be wise, humble, and God-fearing. Two, examine our own hearts. We want to ensure we seek God’s guidance in all that we do.

Father, help me to be a leader who seeks your wisdom and guidance. Give me the humility to listen to others and the courage to make tough decisions. May your will be done in my life and in my community. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
