We often experience disappointment in life. Often, we are disappointed by people. It can be even more painful when it comes from those we trust or those we look up to. It could be a friend who let us down, a leader who failed to meet our expectations, or someone we trust who chose to betray us. The pain does not just come from the wounds stabbed by Brutus’ dagger, the heart ache is even worse. The sting of disappointment can leave us reeling with disillusion and discouragement.
As Christians, we are not immune from disappointment. And we may meet people who disappoint us. We must remember that while people may fail us, God never will.
“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.” (Ps 118:8)
This verse encourages us to place our ultimate trust in God, who is always faithful, even when others are not. He will never leave us or forsake us.
What then do we do? Do we avoid people like plague, so we do not get hurt? Do we then not trust anyone? Not at all. Not trusting anyone is not the way to live a life.
We ourselves are not perfect. It is natural to feel hurt when disappointment strikes. However, it is essential to turn to God for healing and guidance. Let God remind us of his unfailing love and perfect plan for your life. People are imperfect, even those with the best intentions can fall short. God can use all situations, even disappointments, to grow our faith and shape our character.
Instead of dwelling on the hurt, let disappointment draw you closer to God. Seek his comfort and wisdom. Allow God to renew your strength. As you place your trust in him, he will guide you to forgiveness and help you move forward with a heart that remains open to love and trust again.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, when others let me down, help me to lean on you and find comfort in your unchanging faithfulness. Teach me to forgive and to trust you fully. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
