In 2 Kings 23:1-25, King Josiah leads one of the most remarkable spiritual renewals in the history of Judah. After discovering the Book of the Law, Josiah gathers all the people and publicly renews the covenant with the Lord. He embarks on a mission to cleanse the land of idolatry, destroying altars, idols, and pagan practices that had corrupted the nation. Josiah’s dedication to restoring true worship and obedience to God is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of genuine repentance.
A key verse that highlights Josiah’s commitment is 2 Kings 23:3:
“The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book.” (verse 3)
Josiah’s actions reflect the importance of not only hearing God’s Word but acting upon it with full devotion. He gives his full attention to the removal of what his predecessors did. Likewise, true repentance requires turning back to God AND turning away anything that displeases God. We must remove anything that stands between God and us. An incorrect worldview, a bad habit, an ungodly emotion, a sin that entangles. Get help from God to rid of them. Renew out commitment to follow God steadfastly and ensure our worship is pure and undefiled.

Father, I thank you for the example of Josiah, who sought to restore true worship in his land. Create in me a clean heart, Father, clear anything that hinders my relationship with you. Renew my commitment to your Word and guide me in living a life that hours you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
