Against the warning, you exited the boat and got on the attached raft. Nothing could go wrong. Then the rope got untied. You found the waves bringing you farther and farther away from the safety of the ship. How often do we find ourselves drifting away from God, only to be reminded of his relentless love calling us back? As we read Jeremiah 3 today, we see God’s mercy and his desire for his people to return to him despite their unfaithfulness.
The unfaithful people broke God’s heart. Jeremiah 3 opens with a metaphor of Israel as an unfaithful spouse. Despite the betrayal, God extends his mercy, urging his people to turn back to him.
Verse 14 captures this message clearly. ‘Return, faithless people,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I am your husband. I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion.’
God emphasizes his role as a loving and committed husband, waiting for his bride to come home. Despite the rebellion and idolatry, he offers restoration and hope. This is a reminder that no matter how far we have drifted, how wrong we are, God’s arms are always open to welcome us back when we repent … before it is too late. We have a chance to repent and turn back to God while we are still alive.
His love endures forever. Even when we falter, even when we fall, he will not forsake us. He is patient. He eagerly awaits our return. Just as he called Israel in the past, he calls us today.
Have you drifted far away from God? Do you want to go back to God? Are you waiting for the “correct” time to do so? Do not wait. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is now. Similarly, wait no longer. If you need to turn back to God, now is the time.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, thank you for your unending mercy. Help me to turn back to you when we stray. Guide us in your truth and remind us of your faithful love. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
