We often heard, do not focus on the gift, focus on the giver. What happens when we forget the one who gave us everything? Jer 2 brings a powerful message about the dangers of spiritual neglect and the importance of staying faithful to God.
In Jer 2, God is in deep sorrow over Israel’s disobedience. They have abandoned him. God led Israel out of Egypt and provided for them. However, as time passed, they forgot all about that. They began to pursue foreign idols. They turned away from the God who had never failed them.
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Verse 13 presents God’s case against the rebellious Israel.
Instead of trusting in the “spring of living water,” the endless source of life and blessing that only God can provide, they dug their own “broken cisterns.” They attempted to find fulfilment in things that could never satisfy. How often do we seek happiness in things part from God, only to find them empty and unsatisfying? Gourmet food, find dining, bespoke clothes, Tesla, bungalow, an illustrious career, high social standing, wealth, flip phone, state of the art computer, expensive dogs, etc. None of them compares to the “spring of living water.”
God longs for us to return to him, to drink deeply from his living water and to trust in his provision, instead of chasing after things that can never satisfy our souls.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, forgive me for the times we seek fulfilment outside of you. Help me to return to your living water and find our peace in you alone. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
