26/09/2024|Psalm 88 – Keeping Faith in Darkness

“Hello darkness, my old friend” is the first line of the song, The Sound of Silence. How does it feel to have only darkness around us? How do we hold on to faith when life feels overwhelming, and God seems distant? Psalm 88 is a powerful reflect o despair. At the same time, it offers insight into the depth of our relationship with God, even in the darkest times.

Psalm 88 is one of the most sorrowful chapters in the Bible. The psalmist is full of grief and anguish. He feels like God has turned away, but he continues to cry out to God. We can see this in verses 3 and 4.

“I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death. I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.”

Faith does not mean feeling hopeful and joyful all the time. There are trying moments in life when we face despair, and we feel that God is silent. The psalmist’s cry to God in pain shows that our relationship with God endures through every trial. Psalm 88 encourages us to keep praying, even when we do not seem to get any answers.

Have there been times in your life when you felt distant from God? How do you continue to seek God, even when we do not feel his presence?

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, in moments of darkness and despair, help me to hold onto you. Even when I cannot feel your presence, remind me that you are near. Strengthen my faith amid trials. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
