Is it not foolishness to place our trust in things that cannot save us? Jer 10 tells us the futility of trusting in idols and calls us to put out faith in the one true living God.

The prophet Jeremiah contrasts the lifeless man-made idols with the living God who created the heavens and the earth. The people of Judah turned to carved images and false gods. Jeremiah makes it clear that those idols are powerless.

Verse 5 says, “Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm, nor can they do any good.”

Jer 10 points out the emptiness and futility of idol worship. No matter how impressive these idols appear, they are nothing compared to the living God. Jeremiah urges the people to turn away from false gods and turn back to God. This is a timeless reminder. Today, we often place our trust in worldly things like success, wealth, or status. They cannot truly satisfy.

Are there any “idols” in your life that you reply more than God? Are there any “idols” in your life that is taking a more prominent place than God? How can you shift your trust from worldly things to the one true living God?

I invite you to say this prayer.

Father, help me to turn away from the things that cannot save. Teach me to place my full trust in you, the living God. Let me rely in your strength alone. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
