After 20 laps in the Olympic size pool in your condominium, you were happy with your stamina. You put on your bath robe, and you were on your way back to your home, you heard someone screaming for help. A young woman was drowning. You took off your robe and leaped into the pool. Your plan is to bring her out of the pool, perform CPR if needed, and call for medical help when necessary. It should not take more than 5 minutes. Right? No. You seemed to have entered the Twilight Zone. You struggled for a long time in the pool. You could not seem to get the girl out of the pool. No one came to look for you. Based on the sunlight shining through the windows, you had spent five days in the pool. You could not understand why something that should have just taken give minutes has taken five days and you still did not see the end of it.
As Christians, we pray. We pray earnestly. We fast. Sometimes we pray so hard only to be met with silence. It is easy to become discouraged when we do not receive the answers we expect at the time we want. However, when we read the Bible, we learn that God’s timing is perfect, even when we do not fully understand it.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Is 55:8-9)
Waiting on God requires faith, patience, and surrender. It can be a season where God strengthens our character, deepens our trust, and shapes us into the people he has called us to be. When we are in doubt, we can look at the examples of Abraham and Joseph. Both waited years for God’s promised to come to pass. They held on to their faith in God.
So, when our prayers seem unanswered, remember that God is working in ways we cannot see. Trust that his timing is for your good. Keep your faith. Hold on to his promises. All things shall come to pass.
