We often forget God’s goodness, only to find ourselves in need of his mercy again. Aren’t we glad that he is always there for us when we come running back to him? He is ready to hold us in his arms, to shower us with his love and forgiveness – if we repent and turn back to him. Psalm 106 is a testament to God’s unending faithfulness, even when we often forget his goodness.
Psalm 106 gives an account of Israel’s history, including God’s faithfulness, Israel’s rebellion, disobedience, and forgetfulness. Even though they saw God’s incredible power and witnessed God’s faithfulness, they kept turning away from him. Even so, God’s love and kindness never stopped!
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (verse 1)
The psalm opens with a rousing call to praise God for his everlasting love.
The psalmist chronicled how God’s people kept forgetting his miraculous works. Time and again, they went their own ways, leading to suffering. Then something amazing happened! They remembered God’s goodness and faithfulness. More amazingly, God showed his incredible mercy and restored them repeatedly when they repented.
Psalm 106 is a great reminder that even when we can forget God’s faithfulness and fall into sins, we can always turn back to God in true repentance. He will forgive us! The great news is that his love is always there. He is always ready and waiting to forgive and restore us when we turn back to him!
Have you ever experienced moments in your life when you have forgotten God’s goodness and followed your own path? Have you ever been engrossed in the “more important things” in life and made God too small in your life? How can you make sure you remember and reflect on all the amazing things God has done for you? How can you let God help you avoid repeating past mistakes?
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, thank you for your forgiveness. I know I often forget your goodness and stray from your ways. I want to remember your faithfulness and live in a way that honours you. Thank you for your mercy that restores me. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
