Psalm 99 recognizes God’s sovereignty and holiness. The theme is God’s supreme reign over all creation and his righteous rule over his people.
We can see this from the very beginning.
“The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; He sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake” (verse one).
God is not only a powerful king but also a just and holy king who loves righteousness.
Psalm 99 reminds us to approach God with reverend awe. We are encouraged to worship God at “the footstool of his feet.” (verse five) and to acknowledge his authority. The psalmist also praises God’s justice and fairness. He knows God answers the people’s cries for mercy.
What are the takeaways? One, worship with reverence. We approach God with humility and awe, recognizing his holiness in prayers and worship. Two, trust in his justice. When we see injustice all over the world, remember that God is just. We trust him to act justly in every situation. Three, pursue righteousness. God loves justice. As Christians, we are called to live righteously in our actions, words, and relationships.
I invite you to say this prayer.
Father, you are holy and just. Help me to approach you with reverence, to trust in your justice, and to live a life that reflects your righteousness. May you be glorified in my heart and through my actions. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
