The love has gone … or has it?

I got an inspiration on 30/10/2024. I put down in writing on the next day and shared it with some close friends. I am sharing it now. It was written 15 days before K left us and went to be with Jesus.

Each day, Logan moved through the hospital room with quiet, precise care. He had stopped talking, but he didn’t need words anymore. His focus was on his wife, Kelly, frail and fading in the bed by the window, the warm sunlight brushing softly against her cheeks.

Every morning, he’d bring her favorite tea—green with a hint of lemon—and set it beside her on the side table. Kelly didn’t always drink it, but Logan didn’t mind. He’d adjust the temperature on her water bottle, fluff her pillows, arrange her blankets (she has three from home, the one in the hospital was too heavy for her.) and the small vase of daffodils she loved, exactly as she liked them. Each gesture was deliberate, each moment a small promise kept.

The nurses noticed his quiet dedication. “He’s always here,” they whispered in passing, sometimes lingering to watch his care. “You don’t see that devotion often.” They were surprised he did not complain about their service anymore. In fact, he has not spoken to them for a long time.

One afternoon, Kelly opened her eyes and looked right through him. Her once-bright gaze was hazy, and for a fleeting moment, Logan’s heart ached with an inexplicable sadness. But he continued on, silent, steady. He wiped her brow, smoothed the blanket over her, his hands gentle, as if touching glass.

Then, in a rare moment, Kelly whispered, “Logan?”

He smiled, bending close, though she couldn’t see him. She closed her eyes again, breathing shallowly, and Logan sat back in his chair, taking her hand in his, feeling her warmth but none of his own.

A memory stirred: the words they’d spoken all those years ago, “Till death do us part.” Logan looked down, suddenly struck with a realization that hollowed him.

He was already dead.

He’d been gone for months, yet here he was, unable to leave. Tethered by love, he had stayed, moving quietly through the routines of care, keeping his promise until he could be sure she wouldn’t be alone.

In that quiet room, as Kelly took her last breaths, Logan finally felt a strange peace settle over him. He leaned forward, pressing an unseen kiss to her forehead. Then, as her breath stilled, Logan rose, leaving the room with a heart no longer bound by silence.
