How do you get some rest?

You sleep eight hours a day. You do not stay up late. You take things easily. You do not give yourself too much stress. Yet, there is always a stirring in your soul. Your spirit is never at peace. How do you find rest for your soul? How do you find peace?

“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Jer 6:16)

The ancient part is the answer. It is the stablished, righteous way of God. It is essentially the path of obedience and following God’s commandments. It is the way of repentance, reconciliation, fear, and love of God. (Feinberg) It’s a metaphor for living according to God’s will.

Look at what we are asked to do regarding the ancient path:

  1. Be in the right position. Find out where you are. (Stand.)
  2. Look for it (Look).
  3. Ask for it. (Ask for the ancient path).
  4. Recognize it as the good way (Ask where the good way is).
  5. Follow it, that is, to follow God. (Walk in it.)

We are created by God in his own image with the purpose to give glory to God. It we are aligned with God’s design; we find rest for our souls. It is not a one-time thing. We need to constantly watch where we are going and adjust our direction to make sure we are back to the right path.

Is your soul getting the rest it needs? Does your spirit have peace? Do something about it.
