Fermentation is the process of converting water into wine. Water is made up of water. Wine is made up of water, ethanol (mainly), glycerol, acids, sugars, tannins, and other compounds. It takes 5 to 21 days for the fermentation to complete. Good wines go through years or even decades of maturing.
We read from John, Jesus told the servants to fill the jars with water and then take them out to serve the wedding guests. The water turned into wine instantly. And based on John’s account, that was good wine.
The miracle of Jesus turning water into wine showed us many things. I just want to focus on one thing – the transformative power of Jesus. An encounter with God can transform the ordinary into extraordinary. It turns the mundane into the miraculous, mourning into dancing, fear into courage, foolishness into wisdom, conflict into reconciliation, chaos into peace, sorrow into joy, weakness into strengths, despair into hope, brokenness into wholeness, sinfulness into righteousness, shame into glory.
Water cannot satisfy the wedding guest. It has very limited capability to do that. Jesus turned water into wine, a symbol of joy and abundance. It surely tastes better than water. We see time and again that God can take what we offer – as simple and insignificant and insufficient as they are – and make them something great, beautiful, and wonderful.
Transformation begins with trust, as evident in the servants’ obedience of Jesus’ commands. How? It is not possible? Why are we not going to town to get wine? They just followed. God works in ways we cannot imagine.
The miracle of Cana, described as the first miracle to show God’s glory, demonstrated God’s desire to transform our lives. Will you now come to Jesus and let him transform yours?
