Enduring Suffering in Faith

Suffering is an unavoidable part of life. It can be grieving the loss of a loved one, an illness, a broken ankle, persecution, hardship, people who do not leash their dogs in the park. Every believe faces trials. Yet, the Bible does not leave us without hope.

James 1:2-4 reminds us that, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Gold is refined in fire. Our faith, in suffering. When we endure hardships, we are given an opportunity to lean on God, to trust in his sovereignty, even when we do not understand. Jesus himself suffered beyond measure, yet he endured for the joy set before him.

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb 12:2) If our Lord and Saviour face suffering, do we expect to be exempt?

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Rom 8:18) Paul encourages us to look beyond our current sufferings.

God used our deepest pain to shape us and draw us closer to him. Hold fast to your faith. In due time, he will wipe every tear from our eyes. (see Rev 21:4)

Take courage, my friends.
