The Sun and the Moon

Do you think you are the sun or the moon? The sun emits its own light. The moon reflects light from the Sun. When sun light cannot reach the surface of the moon, the moon is dark, and the earth gets no light from the moon.

As Christians, we believe our source of light is Jesus. Like the moon, we cannot generate our own light. We reflect the light of Christ. The light of Christ shines through us.

Jesus declared himself to be the light of the world. Without him, we will be in darkness.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Mt 5:14-16)

The Bible also told us we are the light of the world. How does that work? Just as the moon reflects the sun, we are called to reflect the light of Christ in a dark world. It does not require a line of sight. It needs a life connected to Christ. It needs abiding in Christ.

When people see us, do they see the darkness that is us or do they see Jesus shining through us and in us? They should see the glory of God. That requires living in a way that gives glory to Jesus. That means living in a way that points others to him – through love, kindness, truth, humility, and faithfulness.

Much of the world is in darkness. It needs all the light it can get. So, please reflect Christ brightly! The world needs his light – let us shine!
